Find a way to access the audio track new cars use for engine noise and replace it with the sound of an engine with a persistent knock....
Heh.

That’s so evil

How about an annoying belt squeal?

No lie, when I picked up my GTI, I thought there was something rattling against the firewall until I realised that’s where the speaker for the engine noise is. It’s grown on me, though. It’s nice to have a boisterous sounding engine note when you want, and a quiet, civilised cabin when you don’t.

But so funny...

As if the average driver nowadays would even realize something’s wrong

Considering all the things i’ve seen in 14+ years of working on cars, I bet most customers wouldn’t even notice lol :]

“civilised cabin when you don’t”
This statement confuses me... What’s this civilised cabin you speak of?

I always thought it’d be great to become a musician and use failing engine noises as background tracks.

Yeah but would you really play this prank on one of your non gearhead friends?

What if someone did it to you? ;)

Good point. The infamous driveshaft zip tie is still my favorite though:

I would just insert random subliminal messages that only come on at certain speeds/rpms.
When I want to drive someone nuts, I literally want to put them in the Looney Bin.
EDIT: Even better, set it up so that the messages don’t play when the passenger seat sensor shows the driver isn’t alone. Maybe even have it to where it only works when key #1 is used (if it is a shared car).

That’s genius! But as many pointed out, some people wouldn’t even notice.
After reading
“Just rolled into the shop”
I wonder how some people survive everyday.
Even though my father had many clueless customers, I have seen some really stupid stuff over the years, but never anything as extreme as in the posts on JRITS.

It’s a classic, really. Just take as many long zipties as you want and loop em around the driveshaft in and the tails will make an annoying noise as they slap stuff, gets louder as you drive faster.

Police siren at 4k RPM. Not too loud, just loud enough to hear over the rest and make the driver wonder where it could be.

It’s something that doesn’t come on Land Rover’s.
